My artwork for this unit is about people with multiple or fluid identities. I personally find these mental situations to be very fascinating. Because fugue states are often characterized by the emotions the person displays while in them, I decided that I would focus more on the conveying of emotion in my work. I used the concept of the comedy and tragedy masks to guide my art, which depicts several different distinct emotions flowing from one center being. My artwork accurately represents my theme by showing how one person can have multiple dominant personalities and how they are often interchangeable.
In regards to planning, I researched multiple personality disorders and fugue states to get more of a deeper understanding of the illness itself. In addition, I searched other artworks that were centered around the same theme.

I referenced this picture to help me with the blurred edges of the face and the 3D aspect of the faces.
This photo helped me strengthen the concept of having multiple mask-like personalities coming from a central individual.
This photo captivated me with its eerie and graphic nature, and I used this vibe to motivate the execution of my art.
This is my artwork as a finished piece. My favorite medium by far is graphite, so I used that to draw the faces. I kept the weight of the pencil very light because I wanted the faces to have a ghost-like feel to them. In order to really draw the eye to the center of the paper, I created a graphic striped design for the background. Though it would have traditionally made more sense to have the foreground darker than the background, I wanted to create a stark contrast that really caught the attention of the viewer. That's why I chose to use Sharpie for the stripes, which also created crisp lines. I believe this technique was successful in creating the somewhat disorienting and graphic effect I wanted the piece to have, which also conveyed the sometimes confusing nature of these mental illnesses.
